Karsten's Ant Farm

Karsten received an Ant Farm from Mema and Papa as a souvenir from all their travels this fall. It's one of those AntWorks like the ones went up in the space shuttle, and has this gel that ants can use for food and still make their tunnels.

This is a great idea for a gift, and the kids really liked seeing the ants get to work on their tunnels pretty much overnight. However, the last couple weeks the ants have just been hanging out at the bottom in a big huddle. They rarely venture out for food or exercise...so we're not sure if we have relatively lazy ants, or if they are eating some bad ant gel.

Anyway, I'll be certain to post critical updates as soon as the ants start to move again...

I didn't know they come in red!

Our ants have also done the huddle thing (although they alternate between that and trying to push the lid off the top of the farm). My theory--they are bored. After you've dug a few tunnels through space-age gel, what's left for an ant to accomplish? They need a queen and children to care for. They remind me of men in a way. ;)

Interesting theory, Jodi. It's certainly plausible.

But why wouldn't they build more tunnels to pass the time? Why wouldn't they start up a heated game of tag or red rover?

Maybe - now that their physical world is in order - they are conquoring the challenges the metaphysical world. If God exists and is omnipotent, loving and good, why is there evil in the world? If a piece of gel falls, and no one in the ant colony hears it; does it really make a sound?

So perhaps their inactivity isn't in vain at all...

Our ants are also doing the pondering thing (in a huddle at the bottom). They seem to take turns going out on excursions, and then they head back to the huddle.

Wow, Aaron, your mental prowess leaves me stammering for a reply. Yes, on second thought, they are definitely solving the problems of the world. If we would each of us host one of these Ant Think Tanks, think of the good we could accomplish.
